Medicine with Mya

Overview

MedicinewithMya is a scholarly platform dedicated to understanding the scientific principles underlying a range of underrepresented conditions in the medical field. Since starting my website in high school, my mission has been to disseminate knowledge and resources in an accessible format, using clear language and comprehensive data to enhance awareness among populations facing these health disparities. Additionally, MedicinewithMya delves into the field of neuroscience, with a particular focus on its applications in early childhood education and development, as well as the examination of homelessness through the lens of psychological trauma. This initiative aims to foster a deeper understanding of these critical areas, contributing to the advancement of health literacy and support for communities in need.

About Me

I am a first-year undergraduate Neuroscience and Computer Science student at the University of Southern California passionately dedicated to fostering growth within myself and those around me.

The seed of my passion for medicine was planted by my mother, a persevering nursing student who would share her clinical experiences and exam challenges with me. Her stories, rich with insights into anatomy, patient care, and the sciences, not only fascinated me but also inspired me to pursue a path in medicine. This ambition was not just about following in her footsteps but also about expanding my scope of practice to delve deeper into the sciences, particularly neuroscience and molecular biology.

As a military child with a background that spans diverse states including Alaska, Hawaii, and Florida, I've found a deep appreciation for diversity. This varied exposure has significantly shaped my interest in neuroscience, driving my curiosity about how environmental and psychological stressors affect individuals in various aspects.

My academic journey has been distinguished by the opportunity to take a multidue of medical-related classes offered by Harvard University, Yale University, and Dartmouth College, among others. These experiences have allowed me to explore subjects such as biochemistry, neuroscience, anatomy, psychology, the business of healthcare, environmental science, and various humanitarian efforts. Each course has not only expanded my knowledge but also reinforced my commitment to making a meaningful impact on the world.

Beyond academics, my life is enriched by interactions across all ages, from children in my organizations to teens in tutoring groups, and adults in volunteer initiatives at food, donation, and blood drives. My fascination with the brain and its interaction with environmental and psychological factors goes beyond academic interest, influencing my volunteer work internationally, including in Jamaica. These experiences have deepened my love for global impact and inspired me to embrace differences and drive change.

My website is a reflection of my journey, blending medicine, humanitarian work, and the joy of discovery. It invites visitors to explore the world of sciences through my eyes, learn about my story and the values I hold dear, all from the perspective of those I've worked closely with. It's a platform where passion for medicine meets the dedication to making a difference, inviting everyone to join me in this journey of exploration and impact.

My Work

Alaska

In the middle of my sophomore year (September 2020) I moved to Alaska due to my stepfather’s work. I knew this would be a barrier because of the lack of opportunities in Fairbanks for students wanting to pursue medicine. But rather than be hindered by the lack of opportunities, I decided to create my own, for myself and others. This started the formation of my community organizations, Over the Horizon and Into the Horizon. Through these reading and science based groups, I've formed valuable connections with over 80 children in the area! We've read over 250 books collectively and have done 50 science experiments as we learn to love and explore the beauties of Alaska.
